Encoding involves the process of identifying the most important information in a situation and using that information to build an internal representation.

Why do children struggle with encoding?
  • They do not know the critical features of the situation
  • They cannot understand these critical features
  • They are unable to encode them properly

According to Gross, hearing impaired children who rely heavily on non-verbal code for information processing show a slower rate of problem solving and a lower focusing score than children with typical hearing development, who rely primarily on verbal mediators for learning. So, the way you encode information, influences your efficiency.
